Medications And Supplies

Below is a list of medications and supplies we've had the occasion to use and vendors from which we've purchased these items. We offer this list of vendors for those who would like to consider other sources for these products and the vendors below are listed due to our knowledge of their willingness to offer these products to individual consumers and our overall favorable experience with them as customers. We revise our list periodically to be sure we are only listing vendors we feel comfortable recommending to others.

We believe it is important to explore alternative suppliers and we typically experience savings as high as 60% off of what veterinary hospitals charge for a number of prescription drugs and related products. There can often be significant differences in prices among different pharmacy chains. The pharmacies that supply medications to humans (such as CVS and drugstore.com) can usually fill the prescription from your vet if it is for a drug that is also used by humans (such as Prednisolone, Norvasc, etc.) We encourage you to compare prices. You can then spend the savings on necessary professional services from your animal hospital!

Let us give you an example of how it pays to shop around and make some calls to get quotes on prescription drug prices. For Taffy's Selegeline (Anipryl), we paid under $30 at drugstore.com while a large, national pharmacy chain's store in our neighborhood had quoted us $79. The local store's price for the generic was even higher than what we had been paying for the brand name of this drug at Taffy's veterinary hospital, so you see how pricing can be all over the board. Do some research, make some calls!

A written prescription from your veterinarian is necessary for any prescription drugs. Additionally, some states may require a written prescription for needles or other supplies. It should be noted that our presenting this list is by no means a statement that your pet should be using any of these medications or supplies. They should only be used under the direction of your veterinarian.

For subcutaneous fluids administration, we use the following supplies (in addition to the fluids):

• Monoject 35cc regular luer tip syringes - Syringe purpose is to pump air into the bottle or bag to get a steady flow of fluids without air in the line to make the process fast and comfortable for the cat;
• McGaw vented IV administration sets (15 drops/mls.) - This is the line that is connected to the bottle at one end and the needle at the other; and
• Monoject 20 x 1 (pink) needles.

We purchase all of the above from Valley Vet, with the exception of the McGaw IV administration sets, which we get from West Michigan Medical Supply.

A prescription in writing or called in by your veterinarian is necessary for all first-time orders for such products requiring prescriptions. Refills can usually be ordered on-line or by telephone.
